Geriatric Rehabilitation simply put older people’s care aims to restore and maintain a healthy lifestyle for the aged ones. It focuses on improving quality of life in older people. Aims at function and well being not necessarily on diseases. It ensures that the quality of life for the older generation does not degrade and that they are always fit.

Lifespan has greatly reduced in this present generation. According to findings, the life expectancy for an average Nigerian is around 60 years. Hence , it becomes so imperative that starting from the age of 40 years and above, you MUST be intentional about your lifestyle and eating habits. In addition, Please note the word MUST.

However, with proper rehabilitation of these senior citizens, chances are that they will live longer, happier and healthier. As mentioned above aged persons go through a lot of challenges, most common is their sight which is a very important part of the body so as they can see properly to avoid missing their steps and falling. Another cause for concern for geriatrics is malnutrition. Older people need an excess of certain nutrients to balance their health. Good nutrition promotes healing and provides energy which in turn improves quality of life.As a person ages, little activities such as eating or bathing becomes difficult.

Fortunately, the good news is that physical therapy or physiotherapy can go a very long way to help them overcome most of these challenges. Physical  therapy focuses on helping the aged stay independent, remain active and agile, stay healthy and friendly, etc. The goal of physical therapy is usually to help them learn to help themselves with less support. Prevention of risk of a fall

Falls are the leading cause of accidents among aged individuals, resulting in bone fractures and other injuries. A physiotherapist can train the individual in techniques to prevent a fall.

Maintaining an independent lifestyle

Patients with foot drop, spinal injury, and stroke are provided with walking aids to facilitate independent living. The therapist works with the patient to ensure that he/she can remain as independent as possible.

Rebuilding strength 

Physiotherapy includes exercises, workouts, and the use of electric modalities such as Ultrasound, TENS, Shock wave therapy, Laser, etc to build strength and improve function.
