Physiotherapy For Crushed Hand
Physiotherapy For Crushed Hand: Damage to the hand from a crushing injury may be severe enough to damage nerves, arteries, tendons and bones or it may be minor enough to cause only soft- tissue damage. Crushed hand injury can happen at any age and to women and men equally. Injuries may be due to the hand being caught in machines, gates or door , under a heavy object or in road or rail accidents.
Physical Presentations of Crushed Hand Injury :
- Tendon may require immobilization
- Oedema formation takes place. Fluids can collect in muscles, tendon sheaths, ligaments and between joint surfaces. If allowed to remain, consolidation takes place which seriously limits and impairs tissue mobility, and hand proper functioning.
- Pain present as a dull ache and sharp on movement.
- Limiting the movement of the fingers to a few degrees of flexion. The fingers and thumb are held in slight flexion.
- Loss of function is severe if the whole hand is involved and is irritating if only one finger is affected.
Physiotherapy :The main aims of Physiotherapy are :
- To reduce oedema
- Regain function and confidence
- Strengthen and regain coordination of muscles.
- Regain mobility of the joints and soft-tissues
