SPINAL INJURY PHYSIOTHERAPY : Physiotherapy has a well-recognized part to play in the management of people with pain of spinal organ especially where the cause is considered to be mechanical or structural.
Pain in the spine may rise from a number of diseases or disorders, classified as follow:
1. Structural and traumatic:
A. Fractures
B. Sprains and strains of ligaments and muscles
C. Spondylolsis and spondylolsithesis
2. Inflammatory
A. Infections
B. Ankylosing spondylitis
C. Rheumatoid arthritis
Physiotherapy for structural or mechanical disorder
The spine ligaments and muscles like others in the limbs are subjected to acute and chronic sprain or strain. Acute injuries tends to settle and the patient may not seek professional medical help. Rest and over the counter analgesics are often sufficient to satisfy the patient that all is well. Unfortunately, if there is true injury (due for example, to a fall, a slip with one foot on ice, a sudden twist or stretch) the pain will settle but unless the patient performs specific exercises.
Subjective Examination
Pain that is persistent, worse at night does not ease with analgesics or by changing from movement, position or rest should be considered with great respect. It may indicate neoplasm, or inflammatory disease if associated with general malaise or a poor colour.
Decision to treat
The physiotherapist has then to decide if the patient’s problem can be treated by physiotherapy. This means that findings indicate a musculoskeletal problem or problems that are likely to respond to physiotherapy skills. This is not always easy because it may involve sending the patient away without treatment.
The Goals of Physiotherapy in Spine Injury Include but not limited to :
- Reduction and Management of Pain
- Streching tight muscles around the spine
- Mobilizing a stiff segment
- Relaxing Muscle spasm etc
