PHYSIOTHERAPY FOR FRACTURE IN THE FOOT

PHYSIOTHERAPY FOR FRACTURE IN THE FOOT: There are different types of fractures. Fracture of the phalanges and metatarsals can occur if a heavy object falls on the foot. This will also cause soft-tissue damage, and consequently, swelling will be very severe.

Another type of fracture that occurs in the metatarsal is a stress fracture. It is usually a result of repeated minor trauma from prolonged walking, particularly on hard surfaces, especially for those unaccustomed to walking long distances. It is a crack fracture affecting the shaft or neck of the second or third metatarsal. A walking plaster will help if the pain is unbearable, but no fixation may be needed.

We physiotherapists usually apply a below-knee walking plaster for fractures of the metatarsal to relieve pain and enable the patient to walk. If swelling is severe, the patient will need to rest in bed with the leg elevated for a few days.

Physiotherapy Management for Fracture in the Foot

More specifically, during immobilization, after applying a below-knee walking plaster, the Physiotherapist will teach the patient to walk correctly in the plaster. When there is swelling, we teach the patient how to position the limb when sitting or lying down and which exercises to practise while in plaster.

After removing the fixation, treatment is not always necessary, but if the muscles supporting the arches of the foot become weak, the patient will undergo proper training. This is to ensure a good walking pattern.
