Body Weakness


Many people use the term weakness as a  means of expressing  tiredness, weariness, lack of energy or fatigue, Although this is not technically correct. Weakness is a decrease in the strength of one or more muscles. The medical definition of weakness refers to the loss of muscle strength.

Weakness may be generalized or may affect one muscle or muscle group exclusively. Diseases of the neuromuscular system, injuries, metabolic diseases, and toxins can all cause measurable muscle weakness. Signs and symptoms of weakness can include trouble doing daily tasks, such as grooming or writing problems with gait, and loss of balance.

People suffering from certain medical conditions (for example, chronic fatigue, insomnia, cancer, heart disease, adrenal disease, or influenza) may describe feelings of total body weakness, referring to feelings of malaise or tiredness, even though no detectable loss of muscle strength is present.

Generalized weakness is most often related to fatigue or low blood pressure. It can be also be related to endocrine problems. Medical reports have identified several conditions associated with acute weakness seen in the emergency room. 

Some Common Causes of Weakness Include:

  • Flu
  • Thyroid disease
  • Anaemia
  • Depression or anxiety
  • A lack of sleep
  • Poorly managed or undiagnosed diabetes
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Vitamin B-12 deficiency
  • Medication side effects, which often occur when taking mild tranquilizers to treat anxiety
  • Certain muscle diseases
