Sciatica Treatment

Sciatica Treatment

Treatment of Sciatica is possible. Sciatica is a nerve pain from an injury or irritation to the sciatic nerve. This nerve originates in your buttock/gluteal area. Sciatica pain ranges from mild to severe  along the path of the sciatic nerve. This is, anywhere from the lower back, through the hips, buttocks and/or down your legs. It can also cause muscle weakness in your leg and foot, numbness in your leg, and an unpleasant tingling pins-and-needles sensation in your leg, foot and toes.

At Effective Physiotherapy and Fitness Clinic we have the expertise and years of experience in treating different patients with Sciatica challenges.

Some people describe the pain as sharp, shooting or jolts of pain. Others describe this pain as “burning”, “electric” or “stabbing.”  Regardless of the signs and symptoms you present with, your pain and discomfort would be taken care of when you book an appointment with us.

The following are the risk factors that predisposes one to Sciatica

  • Aging
  • Have an injury/previous injury
  • Are overweight
  • Lack a strong core
  • Have an active, physical job
  • Lack proper posture in the weight room
  • Have diabetes
  • Have osteoarthritis
  • Lead an inactive lifestyle
  • Smoke

It’s true that sciatica is also common in pregnancy as a result of progressive increase in weight of mother and baby. However increased weight is not the main reason why pregnant women have sciatica. Loosened ligaments can cause the spine to become unstable and might cause disks to slip, which leads to nerves being pinched and the development of sciatica. The baby’s weight and position can also add pressure to the nerve.

The good news is that Physiotherapy can help you ease sciatic pain before, during or after pregnancy. If you are pregnant, be sure to follow good posture techniques during pregnancy to also ease your pain. But if the pain becomes persistent and unbearable, get in touch with us for effective physiotherapeutic touch that will dislodge the pain.
